Steelers Camp Buzz: Rico Dowdle Positioned as Unquestioned RB1 Over Jaylen Warren

What happened

Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer Mark Kaboly, writing for the Pat McAfee Show, stated that even though Jaylen Warren is very good, free-agent addition Rico Dowdle will be the “unquestioned RB1 when the season starts.” Kaboly noted Dowdle’s combination of quickness, speed, vision, and power goes beyond a simple bruising style, making him more than a platoon back. The team’s first preseason depth chart listed Warren ahead of Dowdle, but camp reports indicate Dowdle has been receiving significant first-team work under head coach Mike McCarthy, who coached Dowdle previously in Dallas.

Fantasy impact

This elevates Dowdle’s fantasy outlook into the RB2/flex conversation with potential for a larger share of early-down and goal-line work. Warren remains a strong pass-catching complement and should retain third-down value, creating a viable 1A/1B committee. Fantasy managers should adjust rankings accordingly and consider both backs as viable mid-round options, with Dowdle carrying slightly higher upside if the early buzz holds.
